With recent research showing a 7.9% increase from 2019 to 2020 in adults expecting to create a new business in the next three years, Innovate UK, which runs the Young Innovators Awards, has teamed up with the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) to explore the importance of role models in business and learn which role models have inspired the current generation of business leaders and innovators.

New data released today by Innovate UK, points to a dramatic increase in the number of young people setting up their own businesses in the last decade – with the number nearly doubling (98% increase) from 2009 to 2020. What’s more, despite the pandemic - and in some cases inspired by the impact of COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdowns - numbers continued to jump in 2020, with a 15% increase in the number of young people starting their own businesses from 2019.

40 of the country’s top female innovators will be awarded Innovate UK’s Women in Innovation awards. The programme supports women with exciting, innovative ideas and ambitious plans that will inspire others. Winners are given a £50,000 grant for each individual, as well as a bespoke package of mentoring, coaching and business support.

In times of economic stability, entrepreneurs who exude self-confidence are the most likely to thrive. However, when faced with unstable and adverse economic conditions, those entrepreneurs who possess greater resilience are most likely to come out on top, according to new research from Durham University Business School.

Timo analysed data of 918 start-ups from Start-Up Nation Central, a private non-profit organisation that has collected data on all Israeli start-ups since 2013. He compared the characteristics of each profile’s vision statement, aimed at investors, with how much funding the venture secured.
