New figures published by the DWP show that there are now 9.4m people aged 50 to 74 in work, which is 3.7m more than there were 20 years ago. The figures in ‘Economic Labour Market Status of Individuals Aged 50 and Over Since 1984’ reveal that in 2015: (i) 8.3m individuals aged 50-64 were in employment representing an employment rate of 69.4%, 12.2% higher than the rate in 1995; and (ii) there were over 1.1m individuals aged 65+ employed – an employment rate of 10.2%, which is more than double the rate in 2001. The figures also show that the unemployment rate for people aged over 50 has dropped to 3.3%, the lowest level since 2009.
