Qualities to look for when hiring staff for your stock brokerage

What sort of qualities should you be looking for in a stock trader? Especially if you’re hiring staff to assist beginner traders or those that are not experienced, you need to make sure you bring on the right kind of people.

The stock market is going through a tumultuous time, but this has led to an increased number of individuals getting involved in stock trading. If you own a brokerage or are thinking of opening one, this means that you’re likely taking on more staff. But what sort of qualities should you be looking for in a stock trader? Especially if you’re hiring staff to assist beginner traders or those that are not experienced, you need to make sure you bring on the right kind of people.

In this article, we will take a look at some of the key traits you need to keep your eyes open for.

Early riser
They say that ‘the early bird catches the worm’ and this is especially true in financial industries. At the hiring stage, it might be hard to tell if your prospective employee is an early riser. Try sending an email or message to them in the early morning and see how long it takes them to reply.

This should give you a good indication of how early they are up and running, and how long it takes them to respond to important communications. Remember, this reflects on how they interact with clients in the future.

Confidence
No wannabe investor is going to trust the words of someone that doesn’t sound like they know what they are talking about. Confidence is key, especially when money is involved. Your staff need to be confident and self-assured as well as articulate in the way they present themselves to clients. Of course, there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance – make sure your potential hires are on the right side.

When it comes to traders choosing the most trusted brokers, the key qualities which inform rankings of those brokers include customer support and user-friendliness. As such, confidence and professionalism of staff members are vital to them gaining a better reputation in the industry. Many of these brokers offer both online platforms and account management services where the personal approach to customer care is really amplified.

Can manage stress well
Working with the world’s markets can mean long hours, deadlines, targets and a lot of pressure and stress. Your employees need to be able to thrive under pressure and handle stressful situations without cracking or giving up. If they are stressed or dealing with immense pressure, they need to be able to remain cool and sound professional when dealing with clients.

A good way to measure this is to see what kind of work they did before and how long they stayed in the job. If they were in tough jobs for short periods of time that’s is an indicator they don’t manage stress well.

Lifelong learner
Working in the financial markets means constantly staying up to date with current affairs, economics, and geopolitical news. This shapes the way the markets perform and will directly impact the advice and guidance they give to clients.

Look out for hobbies such as reading, news, and current affairs and see if they undertake additional courses and training as well. These are good indicators that the individual has the right mindset for lifelong learning and development.

When hiring your team, these are some useful pointers to keep in mind. Remember also to follow your heart, your gut, and your brain, and you can’t go wrong!
