Reflecting on Empowering Temporary Workers

Looking back on my time as an HR manager in the hospitality industry, navigating the complexities of post-Brexit regulations was just the beginning of the challenges we faced. Amidst uncertainties, one aspect remained constant: the crucial role of supporting and enriching the working lives of temporary workers. In this reflective article, I delve into the initiatives I championed, the hurdles we overcame, and the transformative impact on both individuals and the organisation as a whole.

Streamlined Onboarding Processes: With turnover rates in the hospitality sector averaging around 30% annually, I recognised the urgency in enhancing our onboarding processes for temporary workers. By revamping our procedures to provide comprehensive information on job roles, company culture, and available support services, we aimed to minimise the transitional challenges faced by newcomers. This proactive approach not only reduced turnover by 15% within the first year but also cultivated a sense of belonging and commitment among temporary staff.

Tailored Training and Development: The fast-paced nature of the hospitality industry often translates into high-pressure environments, leaving little room for skill development and career progression. Determined to change this narrative, I spearheaded initiatives to invest in the training and upskilling of temporary workers. By collaborating with department managers and allocating resources towards targeted training programs, we witnessed a remarkable 40% increase in the upward mobility of temporary workers within a two-year period.
