Remote work abroad: Spain is the dream

A recent survey* questioned UK professionals of working age around their attitudes to working abroad remotely.   Data from the Office For National Statistics shows that 44% of Brits work remotely in 2023, with gaining popularity amongst professionals all over the world. Allowing for new possibilities, including working from a country you’ve never before called home and taking your job with you.

The survey* analysed attitudes from different regions across the UK, as well as some other factors like income and relationship status, to show how they differ in their opinions.

Key Survey Insights:

  • 22% of Brits would choose Spain if they were to relocate abroad to work remotely, followed by the United States (19%) and France (13%)
  • Those from Yorkshire and Wales are more than three times less likely than the Scottish to consider moving abroad for work.
  • The biggest financial concern for 31% of Brits around relocating abroad is healthcare costs – understandable when compared to our wonderful NHS!
  • Londoners are the most likely to believe they would have higher spending power in Spain (43%)
  • Wealthier respondents seem generally less likely to consider moving abroad

The survey also looked into knowledge of and opinions about the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa, highlighting that 89% of respondents are unaware of the scheme.

Overall, the *survey has shed light on some interesting outlooks from UK working professionals – results highlight the need for more detailed information about the digital work visa and the linguistic, financial and cultural challenges faced before making a significant decision such as moving abroad to work.

*Nebeus surveyed 400 UK professionals of working age through the use of a questionnaire. Questions were a mixture of quantitative and qualitative to allow for statistical data and manual analysis of responses.
