Fines for employing illegal workers down by 74%

A report that Home Office transparency data has revealed that fines for hiring staff with no right to work in the UK plummeted.

People Management report that Home Office transparency data has revealed that fines for hiring staff with no right to work in the UK plummeted in the second quarter of the year. Data shows: (i) fines totalling £1.9m were issued to employers in the second quarter of 2018, down 74% from the same quarter of 2017, where fines were £7.3m; (ii) 119 penalties were issued, down 73% compared with 432 the year before. Latest ONS statistics for April to June 2018 revealed there were 2.28m EU nationals working in the UK, 86,000 fewer than for a year earlier (the largest annual fall since comparable records began in 1997) and 1.27m non-EU nationals, 74,000 more than for a year earlier.
