Paternity leave uptake falls for first time in five years

Figures obtained from HM Revenue and Customs show that the number of new fathers taking paternity leave fell for the first time in five years last year.

Figures obtained from HM Revenue and Customs show that the number of new fathers taking paternity leave fell for the first time in five years last year. Personnel Today report that figures obtained from HMRC by law firm EMW showed there was a 3.3% drop in the number of fathers who took paternity leave in the 12 months to 31 March 2018, down to 213,500 from 221,000 the year before. The figures also showed that 662,700 mothers went on maternity leave, compared with 661,000 the previous year (0.3% increase) and 9,200 new parents took advantage of share parental leave in 2017/18 – only 500 more than the previous year.
