I am often asked by professionals and graduate & post graduate advanced students, ‘how do you know if someone is really competent in their job and profession even if they say that they are’? I simply ask 6 questions to get to the details of if they are competent or not.

I am often asked by professionals and graduate & post graduate advanced students, ‘how do you know if someone is really competent in their job and profession even if they say that they are’? Contributor Michael Marshall, PhD – www.AskTheBusinessDoctor.com

I simply ask 6 questions to get to the details of if they are competent or not. Keeping in mind that competence comes from a combination of; Experience; Education; Research; Trainings & certifications and Self-study.

A true passion for seeking out competence and continuing education of all types.

Tell us details about how you got your competence early and throughout your career

Tell us details about the last 12 to 24 months activities and efforts to increase competence

Tell us about your plan for the next 12 to 24 months to increase competence

Give us examples of your competence in actual experience and accomplishments over the years of your career

Give us examples in detail of recent competence in actual experience and accomplishments and the challenges. Tell us about planned experience for the next 1 to 3 years to increase your competence

Many who say that they personally think/believe that they are highly competent fail answering adequately these 6 simple questions.

For those individuals who can adequately answer all of these 6 questions, I advise that their senior level leadership/management in their company or organisation to promote them and give them a significant pay raise to keep them. If you know of such individuals that currently do not work in your business or organisation, I suggest hiring them immediately.
