Heraldscotland report that an employee of Dundee Football Club who was told his job was obsolete when he was recovering from cancer has been awarded £11,000 after winning his disability discrimination claim. Mr Brown, was due to return to work after surgery for a tumour on his kidney when his employer broke the news to him that a new commercial manager would be taking over his duties organising events, but that he could continue working at match day hospitality – as long as he accepted a pay cut. Brown raised a grievance with the club claiming that it appeared that his life-threatening illness had been used as a convenient vehicle to make him redundant, or at least change his position to a lesser one with a poorer rate of pay. His grievance was not upheld. The club told the ET there were “good business reasons” for the decisions it made, but failed to show what those reasons were.
