Good workplace practices can spot and resolve mental health issues

A new report published by the TUC, Good practice in workplace mental health , says workers have been experiencing a significant increase in stress, which in some cases has led to mental ill health. The report says recent years have shown significant increases in cases of stress-induced mental ill health, as a result of austerity both on workers’ working and home lives; however, many employers were unable to deal with this properly leading to many people losing their jobs as a result and failing, often because of the stigma associated with mental health, to find new employment. The report contains case studies showing good practice in creating mentally healthy workplaces. Page 13 sets out a number of conclusions/recommendations including that middle managers should be trained to understand how to deal with mental health issues as they are best placed to spot problems, but often do nothing through fear of ‘getting it wrong’.
