The Ministry of Defence has published a consultation on the future of the UK's Reserve Forces, to consider how best to generate and sustain the increased numbers and capabilities of reservists to meet the UK's defence requirements, which includes proposals for a “new relationship with employers”.

The Government has opened a consultation on the future of the UK’s reserve forces, entitled “Future reserves 2020: delivering the nation’s security together”. As part of the wide-ranging consultation, the Government has made a number of proposals for a “new relationship with employers”, based on principles of openness and mutual benefit, with the goal of encouraging and incentivising employers to support reservists. The proposals include: (i) a “voluntary charter” for employers of reservists, with a working example in an Annex C, intended to recognise the benefit of employing reservists and provide a framework for a reservists’ employment policy; (ii) considering “anti-discrimination legislation” to protect reservists; and (iii) recognising the contribution that employers make through a national “kitemark” recognition scheme. The consultation closes on 18 January 2013.
