ECU guide to conducting equality surveys

The Equality Challenge Unit has published a guide on conducting equality surveys, which sets out the best practice approach

The Equality Challenge Unit has published a guide on conducting equality surveys. While the guidance has been formulated for higher education institutions, it nevertheless provides a best practice approach, which will assist any organisation carrying out a diversity/equality survey.

The publication from the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) Effective Equality Surveys points out that undertaking an equality survey is a journey of discovery. A key driver for the development and delivery of equality surveys is the potential for gathering valuable data on the perceptions and experiences of people within the organisation. An equality survey also positively demonstrates a commitment to promoting equality and diversity, and encourages engagement.

This guidance discusses the key considerations when developing and delivering equality surveys.  The guide highlights that for surveys to be successful, they need to be tailored to each institution’s needs, resources and population. Topics covered include: (i) developing the survey; (ii) methodology for carrying out the survey; (iii) maximising response rates; (iv) data analysis; and (v) writing a report.
