Top 20 list of employers for working families published

As part of its 30th anniversary celebrations in 2009, work-life balance charity Working Families has launched an inaugural list of ‘the best of the best’ family-friendly employers from the last three decades. The list shows the Top 20 organisations whose initiative and example have made positive change happen for working families.

The inaugural list of top employers for working families marks the 30th anniversary of Working Families (WF). These are employers judged by WF to have a track record of being family-friendly. Winners have shown leadership in one or more of the following areas: flexible working, childcare provision, maternity and/or paternity policy, and help with eldercare responsibilities.

Winners from the private sector include: Accenture (UK) Limited, American Express UK, B&Q, Ford Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Lloyds TSB Bank plc and KPMG. Public sector winners include: the Metropolitan Police Service, the Ministry of Justice and the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

The judging process revealed common elements which the Top 20 show can really make a difference between having good policies and being a family friendly employer. These include the appointment of high profile “champions” and showcasing that flexibility is no impediment to success – for example, showing people rising through the organisation while still working flexibly. The listed organisations also demonstrated an emphasis on wellbeing, recognising that happier employees will be better motivated to perform at their highest level.
