Structured data is clearly able to tell you what’s happening, but it doesn’t tell you why it’s happening. This is where analysing unstructured data comes into play; as it can show potential business intelligence that can ultimately drive growth. Structured data may be able to show revenue performance figures and operational metrics, but unstructured data shows deeper insights. For example, what feedback from employees, at various levels, is being received about a new initiative? So, what impact is this having, and how can it be communicated to the senior leadership to influence change? An understanding of why a particular initiative or organisation change might have a large impact - either positive or negative - will bring huge advantages for an organisation.


According to IDG Research, 93 percent


of all digital data will be unstructured by 2022. Understandably, this has huge implications, not only for current and future data management, but IT security too. With such an influx of data, how can organisations keep sensitive data under control? Having little or no understanding of what is going on across their unstructured data and without proper visibility into who does what and who accesses what, makes it an almost impossible task. This of course raises concerns over data protection compliance and privacy laws, such as the widely discussed General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which came into play in May 2018. And it’s not just internal risks, but external too. The accessibility and sharability of structured data means it poses a significant risk in terms of vulnerability from cyberattacks. Added to the amount of

locations unstructured data can live within an organisation’s structure, as well as the numerous devices it can be accessed from, you can see where the issue escalates. So how can organisations make the most of data’s hitherto underused unruly cousin, in order to drive true business advantage? Looking at data in a visual way enables organisations to gain an understanding of the whole picture. This applies to both structured and unstructured data and, in particular, enables unstructured data to be turned into something practical and tangible. In business, we are all - to a lesser or greater degree - time sensitive and often resource poor, especially in the current climate. Nobody wants to spend ages sifting through reports to find the information they need. But by taking high volumes of both structured and unstructured data and turning it into easily digestible reports, organisations are able to gain insights that provide a true competitive advantage, providing feedback to whoever may need it and informing future strategies. Additionally, viewing data from multiple sources, but seeing the results in one place, empowers users to learn more about the unstructured data, by drilling down to a more detailed view, enabling them to harness opportunities and address issues.


The combination of structured and unstructured data has the opportunity to be extremely powerful for an organisation. It provides the ability to see quickly and clearly, not only what is happening in real- time - such as which team might be under/ over-resourced, or which teams are not meeting targets - it also lets them see why, and


to take any necessary corrective actions. The mountain of unstructured data is only going to grow higher, so it’s time for organisations to have all departments involved in making sense of unstructured data more easily, to uncover more valuable insights. Using data effectively paves the way for business advantage and, as the custodians of people data, HR has a real opportunity to take a lead and influence peers in the most effective way possible, with great insight and strategic input. The time for seizing that initiative is now.
