In the past, organisations could veneer over a legal misdemeanour here, pump some dubious sludge into a river there, but no more. Everything is out in the open, and the bigger the organisation, the greater the risk that any shortfall will be held to account, made public and challenged by one of a myriad of watchdog quangos.

For every headline maker that defines corporate ethics and values such as; the quota of women on boards and equality of pay and opportunity, there is a myriad of fundamental issues that have to be considered and addressed, not swept under the corporate rug. As UK businesses sail further towards the horizon to trade, it becomes increasingly clear that the cultures and values that we are bound to, are practically non-existent in some of the strongest and fastest growing economies in the world.

A car stops for the hitchhiker who says: “Give us a lift”, to which the driver replies; “you look great, the world’s your oyster, go for it”... and drives on (with thanks to Tommy Cooper). Whether it is self-improvement or team management, most “people” books have a vein running through them, that positivity of mind does a great deal of running when it comes to; engagement, loyalty, performance and wellbeing. But like our chum on the side of the road, words can often have a hollow ring.

It matters not one jot whether the economy is booming or busting, people leave because they have found something better, however you define better. If in the past the reason was more money, today that might not be the driving motivation as a myriad of needs, wants and must- haves compete. Big data and analytics hold the key to whether, in the great scheme of things, churn and attrition are sustainable, but more often than not, HR departments are finding themselves trying to stem the flow. Adding fuel to the flames, the war for talent is a well-

discussed concern that effects most organisations across sectors, along with the costs associated with leavers always a key agenda point in the FD's reports. The new reality is that employers cannot leave anything to chance and the directive is usually to think creatively, because in these long and protracted cash-strapped times, non-financial incentives have a stronger impact, or so the theory goes.

There are two mega trends in the workplace that are conspiring to change the use of interim managers and what IM represents as a strategic option for employers - the ageing workforce means that many businesses, which have long been top heavy with senior managers and leaders are leaving, and the much-discussed dribbling pipeline is causing a drought of future potentials to take their place.
