Retail sales weak in January

Sales were up 0.1 percent in January, against analyst forecasts of a much larger 0.6 percent rise. This suggests consumers were somewhat reluctant to splurge in the January sales. The news is a further blow to the UK’s domestic economic prospects following December’s 1.4 percent decline.

Are UK shoppers falling out of love with the internet?

Home delivery expert ParcelCompare says todays ONS retail sales figures for January show online growth slowing. The parcel and home delivery experts ParcelCompare says the growth in internet sales, which have been propping up retail for many months, fell back sharply in January with year on year growth of just 9.1% - e-commerce was growing at 19.2% in January 2017.

Online fashion sales polar opposite of High Street results

ParcelCompare’s Head of Consumer Research, David Jinks MILT, says: ‘Online and High Street sales are in opposite worlds. Online Department store sales soared 19.2 percent and clothing and shoes 17.9 percent YOY in October. But High Street Department store’s sales volumes actually fell by -0.1 and fashion sales fell by -1.8 percent YOY’.

Retail sales beat expectations

We’ve been waiting for the pay squeeze to filter through to the high street, and at first glance today’s numbers aren’t good news on that front. A decline of 0.3 percent is the first annual drop since March 2013. But the numbers aren’t as bad as they look. A 0.3 percent drop is better than the 0.6 percent fall which was forecast.

The currency markets are clearly paring back bets that the Bank is going to raise rates imminently thanks to these latest figures, though the odds are still very much in favour of a rate hike. The stage is now set for a big decision from the central bank on 2nd November.’
