In these instances, however, one in eight lesbian, gay and bi people wouldn’t feel confident reporting homophobic or bi-phobic bullying to their employer. For trans people this increases to 21 per cent for those that wouldn’t report transphobic bullying.

This article sets out to demystify leave entitlements for same-sex couples so that employers are in the best position to support LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) parents or prospective parents. There are no specific rights which apply to same-sex couples, although employers must always be careful not to treat individuals differently as a result of their sexual orientation.

Most LGBT+ employees surveyed say being out has had a positive impact on their career. Only 29 percent of employers have programmes focused on the retention of LGBT+ talent. Even fewer (12 percent) LGBT+ employees are aware such programmes exist within their organisation.
