A sense of fun and providing benefits boosts workplace productivity

One of our strengths lie within our commitment to respect the interests of all our stakeholders including our employees, putting their welfare and development at the heart of everything we do.

One of our strengths lie within our commitment to respect the interests of all our stakeholders including our employees, putting their welfare and development at the heart of everything we do.

A business is only a strong as the people who operate within it. This is a sentiment, which is echoed in the organisational structure that has been built at Peninsula. It is important to acknowledge that without the hard work and dedication of the talented individuals, we would not have achieved half of the success and recognition we have received. For this reason, our ultimate aim is to foster and facilitate the learning and progression of every employee that steps through our doors, providing a work environment that is enriching, rewarding and above all fun to be a part of. Fun is of course not a one size fits all elements to incorporate into the workplace and it is all about learning what works for you through trial and error. One of the most important considerations for us was to find something that fits in with and mirrors our ethos, culture and future goals. When it comes incorporating fun through workplace incentives bigger isn’t always better. On the whole, what we have found is that employees have responded to small tokens and gestures, which demonstrate our appreciation for their hard work and contributions to the company.”

One of our longest running benefits is the ‘Baker’s Breakfast’, which is our way to cure those Monday morning blues we are all susceptible to. Every Monday we offer all employees a free breakfast, which ranges from a full English breakfast to a healthier option of porridge and fruit. Unsurprisingly the turnout is always high, which we believe is not only a result of the free provisions, but because it enables employees to start the week in the right way, catching up with colleagues from across the business, providing an incredible social atmosphere, which facilitates interaction and collaboration amongst the entire workforce. The health and wellbeing of employees is paramount to us. Employees aren’t just a number to us, but a member of a larger family who we care for on a personal and professional level. With this in mind, we like to make health and fitness a priority, encouraging participation from even the most reluctant of individuals by making it fun and interactive. On a weekly basis we offer several exercise classes, which range from boot camp style sessions to dance yourself fit. These are a great way to wind down after a long day at work and serve as an excellent stress buster.

Based on the employee feedback we receive, these classes provide our employees with the opportunity to build fitness into their weekly routine, but without feeling like a burden or a chore. Fun, wellbeing and productivity also work hand in hand through consistent work and support of numerous charities, specifically Destination Florida, of which our Managing Director, Peter Done is a Trustee. Our definition of success isn’t dictated by the number of accolades we receive or the amount of money we make, but more so from encouraging our employees to see how business can benefit others through engaging with the local and wider community. Over the years our employees have set the precedent for our charitable work, organising multiple events from food drives to collect donations for local food banks to themed Fun days to raise money for great causes. As part of our staple Fun day Friday one event designed by our employees was The Ha Ha Club @Peninsula, a night filled with laughs and entertainment in aid of Destination Florida. Not

only was this a great excuse for our employees to let their hair down and spend time together outside of working hours, but their hard work helped raised a significant amount for charity. Aside from the above, our Fun day Fridays have included carnival themed events and our own answer to the Great British Bake Off, where the proceeds of all cakes bought went to Macmillan. There is no denying the positive effect that supporting charity has on an organisation and its employees. When we run events there is always a rush of excitement and jubilation in the air, something that stems from knowing that you are giving back and making a difference to the community around you. This is one of the most valuable things a business can do.
