Tech talent has been notoriously hard to keep hold of at the moment with many companies wondering what the best course of action is. Demand for things like better benefits, hours, and pay has been forcing many companies to really assess what they offer a candidate. The introduction of resources to support this talent has been integral for many businesses. While it seems like a thing of the past, The Great Resignation affected many industries, and continues to do so today. Tech talent has been notoriously hard to keep hold of at the moment with many companies wondering what the best course of action is. Demand for things like better benefits, hours, and pay has been forcing many companies to really assess what they offer a candidate. The introduction of resources to support this talent has been integral for many businesses. This is why the use of software for internal communications and HR matters can make all the difference when it comes to keeping employees.

A large focus of what the future holds for tech companies relies on their workplace experience. While having a great salary is wonderful, it means nothing to an employee if the workplace experience isn’t great. The tech world is rapidly changing and developing, meaning that these employees want a workplace that evolves too. A focus on workplace experience has resulted in the introduction of things like employee apps and workplace teams. Emphasis on open communication has been highlighted by those throughout all industries and many employers have had to respond to this due to the significant cost of hiring new employees in terms of time, recruitment, training etc. Investments in a workplace experience platform which supports workplace communications and workplace management can make all the difference.

As a workplace experience platform with clients in a variety of industries, we’ve noticed shifts across the board. There has been a large increase in companies who want to improve internal communication. While a large part of this can be attributed to the pandemic, it is also due to the need to retain talent as part of the Great Resignation trend. As a result, many businesses have turned to workplace experience software. This is largely to support all employees and bridge the digital and physical workplace. Depending on the use case, employers are choosing the right solution to improve the workplace experience so employees stay happy, engaged, and productive.

Companies with a large number of employees in varying areas, can greatly improve the workplace experience with internal communication tools that broadcasts important information to all employees, deskless or otherwise. On the other hand, during the pandemic, companies have added digital workplaces so their staff can more easily communicate, collaborate, and share files while working remotely. And now with more corporate employees returning to the office or adopting a hybrid work model, they’re now providing employees with desk-booking or room booking features, as well as other employee apps to help make this transition easy and offer an improved workplace experience. So what we’ve discovered is that companies who invest in the workplace experience during this time, also invest in their employees.

In terms of pinpointing an exact reason, it’s been difficult to find one main contributor. It has, however, been a mixture of things which largely revolve around a general workplace dissatisfaction. The Great Resignation has been a time in which many people are reassessing their goals in life. For many this acted as a moment to move on, or switch to something else. Many industries were under a tremendous amount of pressure and their employees felt this too. For some, the infrastructure and support simply wasn’t there. We had many clients coming to us wanting to introduce new features to make workplace communication and workplace management easier. This could be something as simple as automated workplace personalisation which adjusts to individual employees, or even through a modern intranet in which employees can access everything they need to stay productive.

The root cause of  tech employee resignation also falls down to dissatisfaction – this mostly coming from a lack of engagement and communication. While internal channels allow for potential issues to be addressed before they become a bigger problem, it also means things like suggestions to be openly discussed and addressed. A reason for this not occurring is due to workplace organization and infrastructure. Policy is often slow to adapt, and lack of flexibility in this area was highlighted during the Great Resignation. In terms of how technology itself can help retain tech workers, ease of use is key. At Appspace, we provide an all-in-one workplace experience platform which integrates with an organization’s existing technology and is super simple to scale.

Overall, to ensure employees are happy and fully engaged, there needs to be several factors which work together to boost employee retention. This will differ by industry, business, and employee, so prioritizing the needs of your employees as well as their overall well-being is essential for employee and company success.
