There are some things that you can be sure of this January – you’ll say you’re going to start going to the gym again, you’ll buy a lot of things you don’t need in the sales, and without fail you’ll receive an email from a recruiter entitled ‘New Year, New Career’. Yes, you heard that right. If you are happily employed, this is officially the best time to see what’s out there. Here’s why: Confidence: When you are enjoying your work, you are brimming with confidence. You believe in yourself and your abilities, and you speak with enthusiasm about your job. Who wouldn’t want to employ you? Conversely, when you aren’t in a good place, it knocks your confidence and will ultimately devalue the opinion you have of yourself. You won’t settle for less: When you are happy at work there is no urgency to find another job so you can be more objective and more discerning about the choices you make. You certainly wouldn’t entertain the thought of moving to a company that wasn’t a better match for you, or go to interview after interview just to get any old job.
Bench mark yourself: You might be content where you are but there will always be a few boxes that your current employer isn’t ticking. Perhaps you would like to work closer to home or have home working options or better pay and benefits. By looking around, you can benchmark yourself against equivalent jobs available in the marketplace to see how you are faring. You might find it’s time to ask for flexi hours or a raise. Get a better deal: Recruitment is all about push and pull. If you are happy where you are, a potential employer will need to offer a major pull to get you away from your current position which puts you in a fantastic position to negotiate, whether it’s on pay, benefits or flexible working. On the flipside, when you aren’t happy, the push to get away from your job is the driving factor, therefore the offer on the table doesn’t need to be as good.
Never miss out your dream job: You have nothing to lose by letting a quality recruiter know what your dream job is. They can keep a note on file and should something come up matching your wish list, they can give you a call. If you are serious about your career, you should always have one eye on your next move. Be knowledgeable about the market you operate in, your value, and be open to new opportunities that may arise.
