Perceptions of wellbeing – looking to the future

What if this was coping strategy for managing stress or anxiety? Would it then become acceptable? Fifty years ago if you saw someone running down the street you’d likely think “what have they nicked or who are they chasing?” Today when we see someone running down the street we know it's someone investing in their physical fitness. So, 50 years form now, will taking a minute to practice mindfulness in work become acceptable? I really hope so!

Spicing up engagement on a limited budget

When it comes to employee wellbeing variety really is the spice of life!  Many organisations miss the mark and don’t maximise engagement by simply limiting their range of services.  Usually due to a lack of budget and imagination.  Some of the most inclusive and engaging programmes cost the least, it just takes a little forethought.  One of my biggest frustrations in Employee Wellbeing is when organisations claim they don’t do anything because they don’t have a budget.  Obviously it’s always useful to have some funds available but even without a budget you can still implement a great culture and boost engagement.

Hormones & Work

Firstly you need to know the importance of Hormones.   Melatonin enables you to get to sleep and Cortisol wakes you up.  We obviously need both, but in the right balance and at the right time.   If you produce too much Cortisol leading up to bedtime it’s likely you’ll have a lower quality sleep.  If you don’t have enough through the day you’ll feel tired and be less productive.

When the only exercise is ticking boxes

The easiest thing in the world is to throw money at a EAP (Employee Assistance Programme) and expect it to work but employees are too smart for that. They can smell a “tick box” exercise from a mile off. Some of the best Organisations I have worked with often spend the least but what they do is spend time planning and creating a culture of wellbeing aka “The Holy Grail”.
