Baroness Margaret Prosser OBE
Deputy Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission
Meeting the Challenges of the New Global and Domestic Marketplace
Society is currently undergoing a period of hyper-diversity. In terms of the age, family status, disability, gender, faith, ethnicity and sexual orientation of our population, our social and demographic landscape is changing at a dramatic and unprecedented rate. Our places of work stand at the frontline of these changes – both the people we employ and the clients we serve are becoming more diverse.
To meet the challenge of the new global and domestic marketplace, we need to be more radical in our practices on recruitment, retention and managing diversity, and also in meeting the needs of customers, clients and public service users. Equality deficits are not just about employment; this is also about products and services.
If we manage our diversity well, we will have greater productivity, and increased growth and competitiveness; if we manage our diversity badly, there will be increased frictions and stunted productivity. There is still along way to go. We need to translate noble thoughts into good business practice; we need to show that delivering on diversity is a key determinant of a business’s success.

Lisa Kepinski
EMEA Diversity & Inclusion Director
Hewlett-Packard
Embedding Diversity
Hewlett-Packard has had many decades of solid focus on diversity and inclusion, which is based upon HP's core values and a firm business case. Over the years, there have been various models in the lifecycle of D&I at Hewlett-Packard, with the goal of embedding diversity within the business.
In this case study, Lisa Kepinski (HP Diversity & Inclusion Director for EMEA) will address four concrete ways that HP has embedded diversity successfully beyond the diversity and inclusion function.
These are:
- Business Managers through Diverse Markets and Leadership Development
- Key Partners in HR & Beyond through a Diversity Sourcing Metric
- Procurement through HP's Diversity Supplier Programme
- R&D through Product Design for Accessibility.
There will also be a discussion on how to ensure diversity is successfully embedded, but not buried.

 Mark Roberts
Business Manager
Remploy
From Policy to Positive Action
Mark Roberts, senior manager within Remploy’s Employment Services division, gives an insight into how a successful partnership with Royal Mail turned aspirations and good intentions into a recruitment process for disabled candidates which works. The partnership enables Royal Mail to tap into a massive pool of labour, assisting them to meet business needs, whilst Remploy guarantees sustainable employment for candidates they are developing through their vocational programmes. This process has evolved to become ‘business as usual’ for Royal Mail and forms an integral part of their diversity agenda on recruitment.
Mark currently manages Remploy’s new Return to Work Service and was responsible for implementing the partnership with Royal Mail. He will give delegates information about how they can tap into a range of Remploy’s Government Funded Services to help turn policy into positive action.

Alison Tickner
Director of Diversity
Academee
Scratching the Surface?
The visible aspects of diversity - race, gender and disability - have historically been the focus of legislation and therefore employers’ strategies and interventions. Drawing on her many years’ experience as a diversity specialist and practitioner, Alison will explore diversity and inclusion in its widest sense, including how to create an inclusive culture.
Alison is a firm believer that buy-in to diversity comes from engagement, involvement and discussion rather than the lecturing and compliance approach. She will, therefore, keep true to her principles and invite the audience to ‘scratch the surface’ in a very participative session.
Her session will encourage participants to pool their collective knowledge and stimulate their individual innovative ideas, enabling them to gain a joint insight into the less visible aspects of the diversity agenda.
It is these forgotten aspects that can help employers harness better innovation and creativity, thereby leading to a more open and inclusive workplace culture.
